The Barge Boat

The Barge Boat, at just over 14ft long, is the big sister of the popular Smacks Boat. Like the Smacks Boat the Barge Boat is moulded in GRP from a wooden dinghy and was built to be carried in davits on a Thames Sailing Barge. The original was built by Alf Last at Walter Cooks Barge Yard in Maldon, home of the Smacks Boat.

I always admired the hansom and powerful lines of the Barge Boat and decided 16 years ago that I would like to build myself one and fit her out as a sailing dinghy. For me the old adage ‘The smaller the boat, the greater the pleasure’ has proved to be correct and I consider building her one of the best boating decisions I have ever made. There are now five Barge Boats in commission on the River Blackwater. The photographs on the website are of ‘Lark’ my own 16 year old boat.

The Barge Boat is fitted out to the same philosophy as the Smacks Boat, a simple boat with a simple rig that returns her cost a hundred fold with the pleasure she gives. Satisfying for either novice or experienced sailor she can take up to four adults in comfort. The Barge Boat is remarkably stable and agile, quick to rig and if you are feeling lazy or are exploring the creeks she handles well under oar or with an outboard engine fitted.

Easily trailer-sailed she is economical to own and with her gunter sloop rig she is weatherly and fast and with prices starting at under £10k she is affordable too.
